How We Are Different

There are other organizations and resources that help desiring students find a path to college, but none quite like On Point for College. Since our inception in 1999, On Point has:

  • Been an open enrollment program – meaning that we’ve never turned a student away
  • Recruited students in community centers instead of high schools, allowing us to reach a population of both students and young people ages 17-29 – 60% of whom are not in high school and have no access to guidance counselors
  • Welcomed non-traditional students including young adults who have already graduated from high school, who are earning a GED, or who have received their education in another country
  • Relied on a network of over 200 dedicated volunteers to provide approximately 500 students in need per year with transportation to and from any college in New York State for all four years of their college careers – driving up to 190,000 miles in a single year!
  • Provided summer and school break housing for students who are or are at risk of homelessness when they return home from college through partnerships with Le Moyne College and the Rescue Mission’s Volunteer Center
  • Provided ongoing individual and non-academic support, including: helping students acquire basic college supplies, awarding grants to cover textbooks and housing deposits, helping students obtain winter coats and eyeglasses, coordinating emergency dental care, and providing a safety net to support our students through any other problems that arise during their college journeys
  • Helped our students and graduates transition from college to meaningful careers through our On Point for Jobs program
  • Addressed every challenge our students may have, whether its complications due to refugee status, dependent children, aging out of foster care, court-involvement, or chronic homelessness
