Struggling in a College Class? Here’s What to Do

Struggling in college is a common experience, but it's not a sign of failure. Taking proactive steps can make a big difference in your grade and overall academic success.

Communicate With Your Professor

The first and most crucial step is to talk to your professor as early in the semester as possible. They want to see you overcome academic struggles in college — but there’s little they can do if you wait until the course is nearly over.

  • Attend office hours. This is dedicated time for you to ask questions, go over difficult concepts, and get personalized feedback.
  • Target your ask. Be specific about what you're struggling with. Is it a particular concept, a type of assignment, or the pace of the class?
  • Inquire about extra credit. Some professors offer extra credit opportunities to help boost your grade.
Utilize Campus Resources

Take advantage of your college’s academic support services:

  • Tutoring centers. Most colleges have tutoring centers staffed by students who have excelled in the subjects they tutor. They may be able to offer a different perspective and explain concepts in a new way.
  • Writing centers. If you're struggling with essays or research papers, the writing center can help you with everything from brainstorming to final revisions — but don’t wait until the last minute.
  • Academic advising. Your academic advisor can help you assess your overall course load, discuss your major requirements, and help you make informed decisions about your academic path.
Develop Effective Study Habits

Sometimes, success is not just about what you study, but how you study. Developing effective study habits can improve your understanding and retention of the material.

  • Form a study group. Working with classmates can help you stay motivated, share notes, and test each other's knowledge.
  • Time management. Use a planner or calendar to keep track of assignments, exams, and study sessions. If you’re falling behind, prioritize study over extracurricular activities. Let your coach or club administrator know if you need to miss a session.
  • Attend class and take good notes. This may seem obvious, but being present and engaged in class is fundamental. Take detailed notes and review them regularly.
Take Care of Yourself

Your physical and mental well-being are essential for academic success. Don't let the stress of a challenging class take a toll on your health.

  • Get enough sleep. A well-rested mind is better able to learn and retain information.
  • Eat nutritious meals. Fuel your brain with healthy food to improve focus and concentration.
  • Take breaks. Step away from your studies to relax and recharge. This can help prevent burnout and improve your overall productivity.

By taking these steps, you can turn a challenging situation into a learning experience that will benefit you throughout your college career and beyond. Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
