About Sharon Nelson
Sharon Nelson has over 20 years of experience in public relations, marketing, fundraising, constituency building, government affairs, special events and healthcare administration. She is the President of the Women’s Political Caucus – New York City. The purpose of the Caucus is to advocate for Women to run for Political/Executive leadership positions, to be stalwart protectors of a “Woman’s Right to Choose,” and aide in the passing of the Equal Rights Amendment.
In politics, she has worked for Gubernatorial candidate, Charles (Joe) Hynes as Finance Director, the (Mayor) Dinkins Administration as Director of Scheduling and (Bronx-Borough President) Fernando Ferrer as both a Mayoral Campaign Strategist and Director of Scheduling and Advance. Additionally she served as a loan executive to the United Auto Workers Union for the historic 1990 Nelson Mandela “World” Tour and the 1992 inauguration of President William Jefferson Clinton.
Her non-profit experience highlights include serving as: Director of Summer Jobs for the New York City Partnership, Director of Development and Marketing for the Dance Theater of Harlem, and Director of Resident Services and Marketing for Bronx-Lebanon Hospital and Nursing Home.
Sharon earned a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations from the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. Sharon is also a certified Finance Director for the Democratic National Committee and is the recipient of the prestigious Public Relations Society of America Silver Anvil Award for the launching of National Cancer Survivor’s Day.
In 2002, Sharon was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. Today, she is a 14 year cancer survivor and the mother of an 8-year old boy.
