UTICA — As a child, Bikash Regmi and his family were forced to leave their native Bhutan and wound up in a refugee camp in Nepal.

There, he was confronted frequently with people dying of malnutrition or due to a lack of sanitation, and vowed to learn about medicine to help save others.

The next step in that goal came to fruition Saturday when he received his SUNY Polytechnic Institute graduate degree as a nurse practitioner as well as being selected to selected to receive the 2017 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.
